Right now credit card fraud is the most common thing and almost every other person you know is a victim. How many people are real victims is very difficult to tell. Credit card fraud has almost become a new business for some people. People can commit this fraud using a simple internet connection and computer. One single person can buy a database or a list of credit cards from a storekeeper or a cashier and use them all at the same time. It could be a major fraud or just a minor one.

Credit card fraud is considered as a felony by the Federal law. Any person committing a felony is sentenced to prison or can pay a fine. There are many different levels and categories of crime that are considered as identity theft. The level of punishment also varies depending on the amount of fraud.

If you have committed the fraud for the first time and you have not used a very huge amount, then you may need to pay a fine, and sometimes you may face no prison. However, a fraud case can be punished from 5 years of prison to 15 years of prison. For a minor identity theft, it could be anything from three to seven years. If it is medium ranged case, then it could be up to seven years. The number of years in prison mainly depends on the amount of money used in the fraud, and also the means and modes used to commit the fraud.
